Celebrities and style...
Is something so far away from my idea of style. Style for me is just a natural attitude.
Please describe your style in three words.
Sartorial, peculiar, detailed.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
To be a copy of something else.
Do you believe in role models?
I believe only in being original and autonomous.
What are your favourite fabrics?
Very traditional male fabrics with crispy feel, such as Harris tweeds, Massawa canvas, linen...
Are there any style combinations that you object to?
Too dressy and too orthodoxically fashionable.
Which city has the best-dressed men?
Berlin and Antwerpen.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
I think of myself as a harmonic and sometimes outrageous combination of both.
What are the rules in the way you dress?
Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
Cuff links and handkerchiefs.
A man should always look like…
Who taught you what you know about style?
A lot of people and nobody...my fabulous grandmother, Yves Saint Laurent, Beppe Croce, Cecil Beaton, an old mariner in Hydra when I was a child.
How do you select your clothing every morning?
Casually, depending on my mood...and I'm very spoilt and mercurial.
What is your biggest regret?
Not being a symphonic orchestra conductor.
The three essential things a man should know about style are…
First to know yourself, then always doubt yourself, and always always have a touch of humour.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
No. Shopping for me is a catharsis.
We will never see you wearing...
Flip flops, bermuda shorts and tank tops in town.
The most stylish person you have ever seen...
Maybe my grandmother. Or countess Mona Bismarck. Or Maria Callas...she was a metempsychosis of class.
What is the first thing you notice on a man?
The one image that defined your approach to style...
All the Mannerism art...especially Agnolo Bronzino and Pontormo paintings.
Which new designers do you follow and why?
Karl Lagerfeld, because he is ageless...Valentino's Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, Hermès' Cristophe Lemaire.
The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is…
The jacket. It’s all about proportions.
What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?
My Austrian grandfather's evening mantels. Crocodile custom-made loafers, my old and faded silk Charvet robes de chambre.
Is comfort an enemy of style?
Which fashion house never fails to impress you?
The best words of advice you have ever heard?
Elegance is not an opinion.
