Are there any style combinations that you object to?

I don’t judge others, but will smile or gag inwardly. I love combinations that show individuality.

Please describe your style in three words.

Rock 'n' Roll, chic, cool edge.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Having dirty hair and not being authentic.

Do you believe in role models?

My first recollection of inspiration was my father.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Often simple fabrics so my gem designs take centre stage. Silk, taffeta, cashmere, and pure linen.

Which city has the best-dressed women?

Rome, Paris, NYC, London, Madrid. And India in general.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

A mix, I used to be much bolder but now I am more edgy. I prefer classic tailoring with accents of bold colour.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

“No rules” is my own rule.

Celebrities and style...

Some stylists have bigger egos than the celebrity. It is hard to tell who dresses themselves authentically anymore.

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

An Ann Dexter-Jones Design buckle necklace, and a huge smile.

A woman should always look like…

She chose her wardrobe herself. It’s beautiful and witty.

Who taught you what you know about style?

My mummy died when I was eleven years old, so I treasure all my memories of her individual style and taste. I always watched her very closely. She had all her clothes tailored to her own design and style; even with shoes she added her own touch.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

Twenty minutes before leaving home, I check my closet to dress depending on how I feel and what makes me feel good that day.

What is your biggest regret?

I should have saved my mother's clothes; I was too young to know.

The three essential things a woman should know about style are…

You wear the clothing, not vice versa. You add your personal flair; it puts a spring in your step.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I browse spontaneously. I hate to go out to shop for a specific piece because it removes the fun aspect. I like to be spontaneous; I find my favourite pieces that way.

We will never see you wearing...

Skyscraper heels because of my broken toe. :(

Which new designers do you follow and why?

Charlotte Ronson — feminine, sophisticated, original, and edgy. Evolves more with each collection. Paul Smith vintage — sexy tailored cut and colourful fabric designs.

Who is the most stylish person you have ever seen?

Decorator Mica Ertegün, wife of beloved Ahmet, the co-founder of Atlantic records.

What is the first thing you notice on a woman?

Her eyes and her jewels.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

I love sentimental gifts. An array of jackets, white shirts, and flirty dresses.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Jean Shrimpton is my ultimate vision of beauty and style. Twiggy made being slim suddenly fashionable and sexy.

Which designer never fails to impress you?

Charlotte Ronson, Zac Posen, Chanel.

One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is…

The one closest to her skin: well-cut and fitting silky underwear.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

No, no, no.

Who would you like to recommend for My Style?

Charlotte Ronson. Inspiring woman, designer, philanthropist, and mentor to the next generation.

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

Look in the rear-view mirror before you leave home.
