The three essential things a woman should know about style are...

You can wear the most expensive clothes, but if your hair is unkempt (and you are over 30) you will look like a mess. Your bag size has to fit your body. Only tall women look good in high heels.

Please describe your style in three words.

Dress, bag, perfume.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

To have a preconfigured, fixed image of oneself and not considering daily changes in body, posture, skin tone, et cetera.

Do you believe in role models?

Yes. When I was a child I wanted to be Catherine of Russia, now I'd like to be Edwina Mountbatten.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Silk, cotton, embroidered, and tribal textiles.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

While I don't believe one should follow prefixed style rules, there are some things where I draw the line — such as men in Bermuda pants and loafers.

Which city has the best-dressed women?

Paris. It's certainly the place where I love to experiment and dare with different looks the most.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

I would say that I'm basic and bold.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

Always try to look as thin as you can.

Celebrities and style...

And stylists in between. So nothing really interesting or revealing of the personality of people, with a few exceptions.

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Scarves.

A woman should always look like...

She has just met the most exciting man ever.

Who taught you what you know about style?

Bad pictures of myself.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

Depending on mood.

What is your biggest regret?

Fashion-wise? An embroidered wool dress that I didn't buy in Oaxaca ages ago.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I always buy on impulse.

We will never see you wearing...

Capri pants.

Which new designers do you follow and why?

I'm not that interested in new designers. A lot of them are hyped up by magazines but they are not really interesting: too nursed by too many mentors on their way to success.

Who is the most stylish person you have ever seen?

In real life? Louis Garrel, wearing a white T-shirt, black pants, and burgundy espadrilles on the set of a L'Uomo Vogue shoot — and please consider that I normally hate espadrilles. Also, Carey Mulligan at Whole Foods in London recently. It was an extremely hot day and yet she was looking so fresh with a long black cotton dress and her elegant posture; I adore the way she tilts her head...

What is the first thing you notice on a woman?

The figure, the way she carries her head, her smile.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

A brocade bride kimono dress that my father bought me in Japan ages ago, two red silk coats that I bought in Cambodia, one Blumarine nude pink dress entirely embroidered in pale gold sequins...it's so Marilyn Monroe singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President"!

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Veruschka wearing a turquoise and lilac pyjama palazzo by Emilio Pucci with a crown of braids in her head.

Which fashion house never fails to impress you?

It used to be Alexander McQueen.

One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is...

Her bra.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

On the contrary: nothing is less stylish than a woman with blue legs because she decided to go barelegged and wear sandals in the winter. Or a woman who keeps falling from her high heels.

Who would you like to recommend for My Style?

Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher.

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

Always check if your dress is see-through before leaving home.
