My Style: Carlo Mazzoni

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Taking shortcuts with easy colour combinations — or the opposite, an eccentricity that today is completely out of trend.

Please describe your style in three words.

Clean, polished, graphic.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Cotton gauze, linen, and rough wool.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

No, there are not. But, I believe a man must always dress in a contemporary way.

Which city has the best-dressed men?

Milan, for sure, has the best-dressed men.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

I am midway between the two. I would admit I am more conservative, but I would like to be bolder.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

I always need a very impressive detail; it could be a velvet jacket, a golden belt, or a ring.

Celebrities and style...

Provide a very interesting subject for a conversation.

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Coloured T-shirts.

A man should always look like...

He is an attractive person. He should also be inquisitive and clever.

Who taught you what you know about style?

I have been working in the fashion field for almost ten years; for every show I see, I move my idea of style a little bit. Designers are my amazing teachers, dare I say.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

First of all, I need to be comfortable. Then, it's a matter of colours and combinations; I can dress classy, but I don't want to feel bored by what I'm wearing.

What is your biggest regret?

Not buying a jacket from Paul Smith. It had a garment around the neck that was impressive.

The three essential things a man should know about style are...

Do not exaggerate, do not look funny, and do not be boring.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

No, I don't, but it depends on my mood. I never go shopping when I'm in a bad mood.

The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is...

His jacket. An ugly jacket can destroy the elegance of a man.

We will never see you wearing...

Trousers cut above the ankles.

The most stylish person you have ever seen...

Tom Ford — I met him only once, and it was enough. All I can say is, 'Wow'! Even if today I think he is not completely about the contemporary trend, the man has got his own style, and it is huge.

What is the first thing you notice on a man?

I notice his jacket and how it fits on the shoulders.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Jonathan Rhys Meyers on the cover of L'Uomo Vogue.

Which new designers do you follow and why?

This is a huge question for me. I admire too many. I can't say who is the best, but I can say that I love wearing Missoni for men.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

It's an Indian cummerbund with impressive golden embroidery.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

No, absolutely not. Comfort is the beginning of style.

Which designer never fails to impress you?

Tomas Mayer for Bottega Veneta.

Who would you like to recommend for My Style?

Ivan Olita, video maker and editor. Paolo Stella, blogger and actor.

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

It's obvious: 'Less is more'.
