Please describe your style in three words.
Untucked femme rocker.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Overdoing it with the trends.
Do you believe in role models?
Absolutely. That’s what my whole blog “I want to be her!” and upcoming memoir are all about.
What are your favourite fabrics?
Denim, cotton and cashmere.
Which city has the best-dressed women?
Paris and New York.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
I used to be much bolder and I wouldn’t say I’m conservative, but I find myself dressing more simply lately.
What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?
I just try to be comfortable and wear what is inherently 'me'… if I’m not feeling it, I know I’m not dressed the way I should be. For instance, I wish I could wear ironically prissy things like some girls, but I would just look stupid.
Celebrities and style...
Don’t always go hand-in-hand.
One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
Bags, boots, blazers and jeans.
A woman should always look like...
She isn’t trying so hard (even if she really is!).
Who taught you what you know about style?
I’d say my mom at first and then a million people after her who live in the style lexicon in my head!
How do you select your clothing every morning?
I hate to say it, but usually it’s whatever’s easy to find in the closet. I have specific outfits that I wear over and over in a season. I don’t have time to experiment in the morning.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
I look online every morning when I’m procrastinating before I buckle down and exercise.
We will never see you wearing...
A skirt suit.
The most stylish person you have ever seen...
There are too many — I sometimes get obsessed with someone and then get over them, so the people who stick with me are the ones who consistently look amazing and comfortable: Mary Randolph Carter, Elissa Santisi, Kate Moss, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Bob Dylan, and Patti Smith are a few examples.
What is the first thing you notice on a woman?
Good question. I usually scan the whole person in two seconds! Maybe her hair?
The one image that defined your approach to style...
There are WAY too many to list here.
One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is...
Her bag and shoes.
Is comfort an enemy of style?
No way! In fact, I say it’s style’s only true friend. If you look uncomfortable, you’ve lost the plot. (And by comfort, I’m not talking about ugly shoes or stretch pants… that’s another story.)
The best word of advice you have ever heard?
